Ambedkar Memorial Lucknow: A Visual Grandiose!

We had made it a point to include Ambedkar memorial in our ‘to do list’ for Lucknow. The memorial had created a lot of curiosity in me right from the time it had been in the news for the use of 700 billion rupees by Mayawati for its construction. The time had come; we were finally going to the Ambedkar Memorial at Gomti Nagar.

Unlike the other public parks, this public park cum memorial does not open before 11 am, so we reached sometime in the noon after being stuck in heavy traffic. We paid an entry fee of Rs. 10 and entered the gates from the main entrance known as the Pratibimb Sthal. The moment you enter, you are hit by the size and extravagance of the memorial. The Ambedkar Memorial is massive in the true sense.

We started walking and were met by huge structures, pillars and an endless trail of 62 elephant structures. After walking for ten minutes, we could see the main structure and a structure which looked like the parliament. Throughout the walk we were surrounded by various pillars and statues. The main hall has a huge door that guards the statues of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Shahuji Maharaj, Narayan Guru, Jyotiba Phule, etc. and of course Mayawati herself.

The Ambedkar Stupa is the spirit of this massive memorial. It has a statue with Ambedkar seated on a chair. Opposite to this is the museum which is called the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Sangralaya consisting of 18 big statues. Walking through the beautiful marble floors we then reached the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Gallery. The gallery contains paintings and other work of art in bronze. The memorial has a lot of open spaces and lacks shade, so you need to be careful about that but the carvings and marble work is quite enthralling.

Inaugurated in the year 2008, the Ambedkar Memorial is a masterpiece of modern architecture and construction built with attractive red sandstones from the state of Rajasthan. Well, after visiting this place I would say that this memorial is a stunning sanctum in the heart of the city and you should visit it for some serenity and tranquility.
