Drenched in Complete Sanctity At Ghum Monastery

As a mindful traveller, unlike my husband, I have always looked out for budget travel options. Hence, there is a great possibility that one would find me chalking out budget travel plans and heading off to nearby tourist destinations by opting for low-cost trips and accommodations as well. Pointless to mention, but still, my hometown Darjeeling is wonderfully blessed with equal number of natural scenic views as well as man-made marvels. If one is just not in the mood to explore nature’s beauty in Darjeeling, they can take the other route and go on to visit local heritage sites. Just as I did. The Ghum Monastery was on my must-visit list since such a long time, but it was our busy schedule that glued us to our seats!

Situated at an altitude of 8000 ft, the Ghum Monastery is around 8km away from Darjeeling. It is traditionally known as Yiga Choeling Monastery and bore a warm welcome board for all four of us – me, my kids and my husband. Both the interiors as well as the exteriors of this particular monastery is awe-inspiring. There is peace and calm in every move made when in the premises of the Ghum Monastery. As it is closely rooted to the culture and practices of Tibetan-Buddhism, the monks and religious visitors at the monastery were deep sunk in the holy chants, which caught our attention as well. I found it to be another way to meditate, relax and unwind hence joined in.

There was definitely more to it. The 15-feet  high statue of Maitreya Buddha was the cherry on the cake for any spiritual seeker like me. The iconic sculpture itself was filled with peace and calm that it would certainly harmonize the senses of its onlookers — the same did happen with me.

While my kids and husband checked out the paintings and other sculptures in the monastery, I indulged myself in deep breathing and meditation to counter my inner peace. With the holy mantra chants still on, it seemed as though my heart and soul finally found the peace and calmness it was looking for.
