A visit to the famous Patan Devi Mandir

It was December 25, Christmas Day and this time we were in Patna, the capital city of Bihar. Festivals can brighten everyone’s day. We could see plenty of decorative lights and feel the happiness in the surroundings while were out in the streets for a bit shopping, the previous day. Though the weather was cold, many people were busy shopping and in some places, we saw beautiful decorations that depicted the birthday of the baby Jesus. We could hear church bells ringing and we spoke among ourselves about the special prayers of that day.

Now it was our turn to move out and complete our journey that began a couple of days ago. Few days of the trip were marked for temple visits. I was keen to know about temples and its ideologies. Somehow, the Hindu mythology is a fascination for me. So we began traveling towards the famous Patan Devi temple. The name of the city is said to have derived from this name. It is amidst the city of Patna. The temple is dedicated to three Goddesses of Mahalakshmi, Mahakali and Mahasaraswati.

As we arrived at the temple, we got off the vehicle and it was a small temple filled with many devotees. We could hear the chanting of prayers even outside the temple. As we entered, the temple aarti was going on. We went and joined the devotees, though I did not the verses, I kept my hands together and kept eyes on the beautifully decorated idols. It was indeed a heavenly feeling! Being a temple dedicated to goddesses the main festival celebrated here are Vijayadashmi and Durga Puja.

We walked around the temple and it was unique from other temples as the idols were made of black stone. There are two temples built in the name of Maa sati devi , which are known as Bari Patan Devi and Chhoti Patan Devi. According to Hindu mythology, the corpse of Maa Sati fell in different part as it was chopped off by Lord Vishnu. It was another worthwhile day, as we could know about the Hindu mythology and visit unique temples.
